There's an old saw about those who live by the sword, die by the sword... Not knowing about salicylates, I was unable to conceive until I took high dose vitamin supplements. It sure beat hormones. But yes, my child definitely has allergy problems that I never did. This article is an impetus to get off the remaining supplements I'm taking, and to determine my methylation defects.

I wonder now about the additional consequences of all the supplements added to processed food, such as enriched flour.

You know I just don't understand why they don't give riboflavin to people with the MTHFR variant, or at least put it in pregnancy supplements! *sigh*.

I'm actually doing some research on folic acid fortification. The argument generally stems from the low social economic groups with marginal folate status are the most likely to get NTD - also the most unlikely to bother with supplements. Its also directed at people with MTHFR mutations (does folic acid even help?). My mum and grandmum both had quite life threatening pregnancies, a still birth and extremely large babies which I think is probably related to this. MTHFR supplemented with folic acid increases the chance of having twins though.

The basic concensus is "we'll monitor it for a few years and see if people start suffering from more colon cancer and B12 related neural damage and then see whether its a good idea". Sigh. There is a big ethical debate out there though.

I hate population studies, people make such generalised flawed statements from them without measuring other factors. Unfortunately intervention studies are difficult to measure over the long term for certain biomarkers without being costly.

If folate is making you ill, I don't think it is so necessary, not when I compare the help it gives to me.
